Nintendo slices Wii U sales forecast but expects to return to profit

Lower than expected sales of the Wii U has caused Nintendo to cut sales forecasts of the fledgling console by 27 percent for its current financial year, down to 4 million units sold from its initial expectation of 5.5 million.

The gaming giant expects to make a net profit of ¥14 billion ($2.2 billion) for its current financial year--which ends in March 2013--as opposed to the ¥43 billion ($6.9 billion) loss it suffered last year.

Nintendo also revised its sales forecasts for the Wii, 3DS and DS, with the 3DS sales expected to reach 15 million by the end of March.

The company also expects to suffer a loss on its operating income, but expects an overall profit thanks to an advantageous exchange rate due to the currently weak yen.

3.06 million Wii U consoles and 11.69 million Wii U games have been sold worldwide since since the hardware's launch last November, with 1.32 million going to North America, 900,000 to Europe and 830,000 to Japan.

The most popular Wii U games, perhaps unsurprisingly, were Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros. U, with 2.33 million and 2.01 million sold respectively.

Pokemon Black and White 2 managed to notch up 7.63 million sales worldwide since its Japanese launch in June, so the publisher be likely be particularly keen to see how the new, 3DS-exclusive Pokemon X and Y fares when it's launched globally in October 2013.

Last week Nintendo announced a new Zelda title and a new 3D Mario to bolster the Wii U's lineup.

The Hive mind behind the Ong Bak video game

We speak to Thai-based developer Studio Hive about its upcoming game based on the Thai martial arts action series.

Martial arts film fans received a surprise last year when an action game based on the Ong Bak franchise was officially unveiled. Called Ong Bak Tri, the game is a mix of 2D-platforming and God of War-style action combat, and is scheduled to arrive on PCs first. The upcoming title has also received the blessing of the original film's director, Prachya Pinkaew, and one of its main actors, Tony Jaa.

GameSpot Asia had a chat with a representative from Studio Hive--the Thailand-based studio involved with the project--about how they're trying to get big-screen action into the living room.

What drew your team to work on this project in the first place?

Studio Hive: We started this Ong Bak project about five to six years ago already, way before Studio Hive was founded. The first Ong Bak film was a huge international hit that was made entirely in Thailand and I think it is perfect for a video game. When our studio finally established an internal game development team, we approached the brand owner Sahamongkol Films for their permission.

Based on the official site, Studio Hive is highlighted as an animation and a concept art-creating company. How much of a challenge has it been to make and code video games?

This project is definitely a great challenge for everyone in our team--we are enjoying every day. In this dimension it is a whole new playing field and we are working really hard with the support of the publisher Immanitas Entertainment to make sure our game is worth the wait.

Which game studios have you contributed your artwork to so far, before doing Ong Bak?

Our creative director Skan Srisuwan was the lead character designer for Square-Enix's Front Mission Evolved during his time in Singapore. We worked on World of Warcraft card games. Other notable mentions would be Star Wars: Book of Sith and Starhawk. Lately we have been doing a lot of mobile card games as they require really high quality digital illustrations.

Were there any other game design ideas you thought of before settling for the 2D action genre? If yes, tell us more about them. Also, why weren't they implemented?

There are three main reasons for deciding to make Ong Bak Tri into a 2.5D side-scrolling game. The first reason is the market. This genre has a lot of fans over all platforms, and the feedback we got so far confirms this.

Second: this kind of game is a perfect fit with regards to the strength and capacity of our team. We don't have hundreds of people working on this game so naturally at this point we cannot do an MMORPG or a sandbox action game.

The third reason is that all of us at Studio Hive are old school hardcore gamers. We grew up playing games like Final Fight and Double Dragon. These games were really cool and are still giving us a lot of inspiration and we want to have that also with Ong Bak Tri.

How much did the film's original director and actor contribute to the upcoming game? Could you elaborate on how they worked alongside Studio Hive?

I consider us very lucky to work with two amazing directors on this project: Thossaporn Poonart, the director for Ong Bak Tri and Prachya Pinkaew, the director of the original Ong Bak film. We really appreciate the level of creative freedom they have given us. We've have a lot of meetings with them to guarantee this game will be an authentic addition to the Ong Bak world.

One very important contributor for both this project and the Ong Bak universe is Panna Rittikrai. He is a legendary action choreographer and is often known as the co-creator of Ong Bak. Ajarn Panna is designing action sequences for the game.

Tony Jaa lent us his name and likeness for the game and we will announce more on his involvement later. I am sure that the fans will be delighted with the authentic "Ong Bak" feel in the game.

Like the second and third movie, the game is set in ancient times. Why not a contemporary setting like in the first film?

This game will be a prequel to a new movie from the Ong Bak series that is scheduled for this year. We cannot give out too many details on this upcoming movie, but the license owner Sahamongkol Films will do so soon.

What will this game do differently from other 2D action-platformers like Outland and the Shank series?

We tried to create our combo system in a way that players will have more options to have "fun" with enemies. All Ong Bak films are famous for their awesome action scenes, and this will also be a main element of our game.

Which platforms will this game be released on? Also, when will it be out and how much?

The game is designed for PC, consoles, and mobile platforms. The first release platform will be PC, followed by mobile. We are currently working very hard to get the game ready but we also want to offer the best possible gaming experience. The game is in the final development stages now; we'll announce a release date shortly.

Falling in Love with Lara: Tomb Raider I

I'm not the first to say, but seriously learn the controls. They offer an ENTIRE tutorial map in the main title screen to teach you every control method and the tricks to each control; it is Lara's mansion. You learn the trick to back stepping before jumping, the water controls, and the basics needed to play.

You jumped into a game from 96 and expected Uncharted. Yeah, the game has not aged well... but you certainly took no personal attempt to learn or gauge the controls and simply became impatient after only a few minutes in. You're playing it like you would a Ratchet and Clank platformer. I guess, sorry the game expected a bit more out of its player?

There comes a point where the majority of your own frustration becomes your own fault, part of which being you're using a keyboard. I'm certainly not going to try and play a game like Starcraft without learning a thing and using a gamepad over a keyboard, then cry in frustration after a few minutes because the games has, magically, not decided to work with my hamfisted attempt to play it.

Johnny, I love you bro, but somewhere in your brain you must have known you were playing this purposefully blind for a laugh. Which I can appreciate, but seriously this game is so much easier than the hell you put yourself through haha

Then again, I'm biased and will play the first Tomb Raider over any of its sequels/remakes because I think it has a better atmosphere. When you really get into it, TR1 has actually a pretty damn good survival horror vibe going for it that most games today have a difficult time grasping. Anyone who played as far in as the Colosseum knows what I mean.

Game is seriously good and a classic... but yeah, the first level is a pretty bad intro. Just sad that you'll never play it beyond that =(

Wii U Virtual Console titles will allow players to save game progress. Additionally, the games can be played on the Wii U GamePad and will feature support for Miiverse.

Nintendo to release updated version of Legend of Zelda RPG for Wii U this fall; new entry that will "rethink conventions" of Zelda also on the way.

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker is getting a high-definition remake. Nintendo announced this morning during a presentation that an updated version of the 2003 GameCube role-playing game is due for release on Wii U by this fall. It will boast remastered graphics and GamePad functionality.

In addition, Nintendo today confirmed the existence of the long-rumored Wii U Zelda game.

This game will "rethink the conventions of Zelda," according to producer Eiji Aonuma, and will be a back-to-basics title. Nintendo said it will be some time before it shares additional concrete information about the game.

The most recent Zelda title was 2011's The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which has sold more than 3.42 million copies.

New 3D Mario announced for Wii U

Nintendo will unveil its successor to Super Mario Galaxy 2 at this year's E3.

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata announced the Wii U game's existence today as part of Nintendo Direct, but did not go into any more specifics other than to say it would be playable at E3 2013, which will be held this year June 11-13.

Iwata did mention that it would be Nintendo EAD Tokyo--the team who made Mario Galaxy, Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Mario 3D Land--handling development of the new 3D Mario.

During the Nintendo Direct presentation Iwata confirmed that Nintendo would also be showing new Mario Kart and Smash Bros. titles at E3 2013, and that Nintendo was already hard at work on a new Wii U Zelda.

A new Wii U Yoshi game was also shown, developed by the same team behind Kirby's Epic Yarn and using the same patchwork art style. Atlus also unveiled its crossover title Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem.

In addition, a new game from Monolith Soft (Xenoblade) was announced. It is being developed under the direction of Tetsuya Takahashi.

Mario's mainline 3D series has produced some of the most celebrated platformers in gaming history: Super Mario 64 in 1996 for the N64, Super Mario Sunshine for the Gamecube in 2002 and Mario Galaxy and its sequel in 2007 and 2010.

The other current Mario series - New Super Mario Bros, which is developed by a different group at Nintendo EAD - came under some criticism in 2012 after Nintendo released two entries into the series in one year; New Super Mario Bros. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U.

Activision unfazed by Disney Infinity

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 16 Januari 2013 | 23.37

Publisher says it is "flattered" Disney is competing with Skylanders, believes it will continue to lead the market.

Disney today announced plans to go toe-to-toe with Activision's Skylanders series through its new game and platform Disney Infinity. With a formidable stable of franchises like Toy Story, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Incredibles to draw from, some may think Disney Infinity is putting a scare into Activision. But that's not the case.

Activision vice president of consumer marketing John Coyne issued a statement to GameSpot today welcoming Disney Infinity to the market, but also making clear Skylanders is the king of the category.

"We are thrilled by the incredible success that the Skylanders franchise has had in such a short period of time. We are also flattered that one of the leading family entertainment companies is joining our 'toys to life' category," Coyne said.

"We continue to focus on delivering innovative and immersive entertainment experiences to kids around the world and are pouring more creativity into our games. As a result, we are well positioned to continue leading the category."

Activision's Skylanders series has generated more than $500 million in revenue since its inception in 2011. The game's most recent entry--Skylanders Giants--drove more than double the unit sales of the original Skylanders in the United States during December 2012.

The Witcher 3 teased?

Polish developer CD Projekt Red has added to existing rumours that a Witcher 3 announcement could be on the way.

Posting on the official Witcher community site, the developer revealed an image above an update on the REDkit beta program.

The image depicts the hilt of Witcher protagonist Geralt's sword.

"If you are wondering what's that in that picture above--well, we'll leave it for your imagination to answer," the developer said.

Last week, a secret message from CD Projekt Red was reportedly uncovered in the developer's Cyberpunk 2077 trailer, which spoke of a "fully open-world game with an intense story".

CD Projekt Red has announced that it will reveal its next project on February 5. The REDkit is the developer's set of Witcher 2 modding tools.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings was released in May 2011 for the PC to a warm critical reception, later arriving on the Xbox 360.

Nintendo Japan merges handheld and console hardware teams

Nintendo will merge its console and handheld development teams at the end of this month, as part of the first-party publisher's biggest R&D shake-up since the launch of the original DS nine years ago.

Reported by Japanese newspaper Nikkei (via MCV), the two teams will now share their expertise as they look to develop future hardware that will satisfy both its Wii and DS audiences simultaneously.

The merged team will be working out of Nintendo Japan's new $300 million R&D facility in Kyoto, which has been in construction for the last three years.

Nintendo's most recent hardware, the Wii U, has resulted in "not bad" sales over its first two months on US store shelves, according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, although the new console was narrowly outsold by its predecessor in December.

Much of Nintendo's 2013 lineup remains unknown, although many are expecting Microsoft and Sony to weigh in with their own new hardware announcements in the next few months, with recent rumours suggesting the next Xbox and PlayStation would retail for $350.

DmC gets blasted in Metacritic user ratings

Despite winning over the critics, Ninja Theory's reboot of the Devil May Cry series has taken a solid drubbing on its Metacritic user score page.

The Xbox 360 version of the game is currently sitting on an 86 Metascore at time of writing, but the user score is a significantly lower 3.0 after 288 reviews.

Many of the complaints are aimed squarely at Ninja Theory's characters and narrative, with many criticising some of the late game (and spoiler-filled) actions of Dante and his acquaintances.

Another common criticism is the level of difficulty, with many accusing it of being too simple for their tastes even on its more challenging modes.

Ninja Theory's take on the series has divided fans since its announcement but most critics have embraced the game. The new combat approach alongside its attempts to engage with themes of capitalism and corporation in particular have been praised in reviews. "Sure, you may baulk at Dante's trendy new haircut, or maybe even miss a little of that B-movie Devil May Cry insanity," said GameSpot's Mark Walton in his 8.0 review of DmC, "but the heart of what makes the series so enticing and so much fun to play holds true here."

"DmC pulls off that unlikely reboot trick of feeling fresh and inviting while still holding onto what made the original series so appealing and so special. There's no point in looking back: Dante has got a brand-new future in front of him, and if DmC: Devil May Cry is anything to go by, it's going to be a great one."

AMD says former employees handed next-gen trade secrets to Nvidia

Four former AMD employees have been accused of taking "thousands of confidential documents" and company secrets to rival technology manufacturer Nvidia.

Chief amongst the accused is Robert Feldstein, a vice-president at AMD - now working for Nvidia - who helped oversee the company's negotiations to include hardware in the next-generation Xbox and PlayStation and also the Wii U.

"This is an extraordinary case of trade secret transfer/misappropriation and strategic employee solicitation," says AMD's court filing in documents obtained by ArsTechnica.

On his last day working for AMD, Feldstein attached two external hard drives to his work machine and "onto those storage devices, three highly confidential files - two licensing agreements with significant customers and a document outlining proposed strategies to AMD's strategic licensing - were transferred," says the 15-page lawsuit.

Feldstein, alongside managers Manoo Desai and Nicolas Kociuk allegedly swiped over 150,000 files across six months before leaving the company,

Desai is also alleged to have bought a hard drive to the office on her last day, where she created a "folder called Perforce - which is the name of an AMD internal database containing the confidential technological work and development of AMD process and product."

Kociuk is accused of pinching 150,000 files across his two work computers, and AMD's cyber-detectives say he ran "several internet searches about how to copy and/or delete large numbers of documents." It's basically Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C and then Ctrl+V, Nicolas.

Using forensic analysis, AMD claims that "Desai and Kociuk conspired with each other to misappropriate AMD's confidential, proprietary, and/or trade secret information; and/or to intentionally access AMD's protected computers, without authorization and/or in a way that exceeded their authorized access."

All three employees and one other manager, Richard Hagen, were also accused of attempting to solicit other AMD staff to join the competition.

The result of all these accusations is that the quartet are up against charges for Misappropriation of Trade Secrets, Unfair Competition, Violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, Breach of the Employee's Duty of Loyalty, Breach of Contract and - as if that wasn't enough - Conspiracy.

Chaos on Deponia Review

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 09 Januari 2013 | 23.37

Poor Rufus never seems to catch a break. If he's not accidentally setting fire to an unsuspecting parrot, or very nearly decapitating the smartest man on Deponia, then he's strapped to a fireworks-powered saw blade in some vain attempt to reach the faraway land of Elysium. Of course, his schemes are doomed to failure. But like with all great underdogs, there's something lovable about Rufus' single-minded desire to escape his downtrodden existence and get the girl--no matter how incompetent his plans might be.

That lovability is what makes Rufus' latest outing in Chaos on Deponia such a wonderful adventure. Depicting Rufus' comical battles with life and love in such a well-written story results in a journey that's throughly compelling, and entertaining. It helps that Deponia is built on some strong foundations. Like in its predecessor, the game maintains a fine balance between comedic relief, character drama, and brain-teasing puzzles--the opening sequence alone is an exercise in great point-and-click design.

Rufus, fresh from the events of the original Deponia, is looking for another way to escape his squalid surroundings and join what he believes to be paradise on board the floating palace of Elysium. Naturally, another harebrained scheme is in order. Cue a hilarious rummage through the cupboards of an elderly couple, the inadvertent flushing of a beloved pet, and the burning of the couple's worldly possessions, all while the couple in question are complimenting Rufus on his new, less-reckless ways.

The puzzles in this opening skit are self-contained, which--while not entirely indicative of all of Deponia's puzzles--gives you a great introduction to the core mechanics of looking at, picking up, and combining objects. On the whole, puzzles make practical sense, but there are more nonsensical combinations and solutions to discover than in the original. For instance, you need to combine an old set of long johns with a crow's nest and some thread in order to catapult a flying platypus egg into the air and hatch it. Elsewhere, you need to make a zebra fish by distracting a fisherman, drugging his bait, and then dipping his catch into a bucket of white paint.

Those with a mind for video game logic won't find any of the puzzles too taxing, but those with a more coherent sense of logic might find it takes several attempts and lots of random clicking to solve them. There's a certain amount of inventory filling to do too, so you have to make sure you pick up everything in a given scene, or face trekking back for it later to solve a puzzle. Such tedium is exacerbated by the fact that there are so many places to explore, from the zany shops and dingy streets of the black market, all the way through to more esoteric locations like the North Pole--complete with frozen explorer--and the stinky, floating trash pile of Isla Watchit.

Dotted between the various puzzles are minigames that help to break up the action, such as simple object matching and math problems, but not all of them are as enjoyable as they should be. Clumsy instructions sometimes hinder your progress, while some minigames simply make no sense at all. Fortunately, you can skip them with a quick mouse click, and their lack of narrative involvement means there's little penalty for doing so, outside of potentially injuring your own pride.

Where Chaos on Deponia excels is in its writing. There are jokes planted in each and every conversation, while the beautiful hand-drawn art is filled with all kinds of visual tomfoolery. The masterstroke comes in the treatment of love interest Goal. And while it would be something of a spoiler to mention what's in store for her, suffice it to say that the resulting hijinks with Rufus and his subsequent mishandled attempts to rectify the situation make for some truly hilarious moments.

The ending's even a little better this time, with a satisfying conclusion that leaves just enough unresolved to pique your interest for the third and final instalment in the series. Like its predecessor, Chaos on Deponia is a thoroughly enjoyable point-and-click game. What few foibles it has do little to detract from its numerous charms as a humorous, and altogether charming adventure.

EA's Maxis label has announced additional expansions for the PC and Mac versions of the game, including The Sims 3: University Life and The Sims 3: Island Paradise. The Sims 3: University Life is expected to be available from March this year, and will allow players to enrol their Sims in university, attend classes, earn degrees and experience college lifestyle. The announcement also revealed a limited edition pack that is available for pre-order, which includes a party pack with additional in-game items.

The Sims 3: Island Paradise will allow players to take their Sims out on customisable houseboats and investigate uncharted islands, manage resorts, and explore the ocean. The expansion is slated for release in June this year.

In addition to the new games, EA has also revealed an untitled expansion pack that will grant Sims the ability to travel to the future, and a stuff pack featuring iconic movie themes and settings. Both untitled games are expected to be released this year.

GS News - Pokemon X and Y announced for 3DS in October 2013

I sincerely hope they have camera options here. I'm not digging the really low camera for that grassy path section.

Also, since this is in 3D I'm really hoping we can customize the trainer this time. I've never been a fan of RPGs of this sort being so limited in allowing yourself to insert yourself into the world. I'd at least like to make the main character look a bit like me.

Joe Biden appeals to games industry on gun control task force

US Vice President Joe Biden is set to meet with video game industry leaders this week to discuss the link between violent video games and gun violence as part of a wider task force into gun control measures.

The task force, formed by President Barack Obama in response to last month's mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, is aimed at coming with solutions for curbing gun violence in the United States.

According to Reuters, the White House has confirmed that Biden will also meet with representatives from the National Rifle Association (NRA), victims' groups, hunting groups, and gun owners to discuss possible policy changes to reduce gun violence, including proposed legislation to ban assault rifles.

Biden will reportedly meet with representatives of both the entertainment and video game industries to specifically investigate the role of violent media--including films and video games--in mass shootings. The task force is also set to look at access to mental health and disability services, and meet with parent, teacher, and education groups.

Obama has ordered the task force to report back by the end of January, ahead of the annual State of the Union address.

An NRA spokesman confirmed to Reuters that the group's top lobbyist, James J Baker, will attend Biden's task force meeting on Thursday this week.

Last month, NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre stated that violent video games are partially to blame for the Newtown shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, which left 20 children and six adults dead.

West Virginia Senator Jay Rockefeller also entered the discussion when he introduced a Bill to Congress that would direct the National Academy of Sciences to investigate how violent games and other such programming affect children.

Gabe Newell discusses Valve's Steam Box intentions

Valve CEO Gabe Newell has shed some light on Valve's own plans towards the much-anticipated Steam Box, confirming that the beloved publisher intends to make its own device, but that third-party vendors will also be invited to create their own Steam-capable hardware.

In an interview with The Verge, Newell confirmed Valve's intentions to use Linux on its own machine but that users would be freely able to install a different OS, such as Microsoft's Windows, if they wish. "We'll come out with our own and we'll sell it to consumers by ourselves. That'll be a Linux box," Newell said. "If you want to install Windows you can. We're not going to make it hard. This is not some locked box by any stretch of the imagination."

Newell also spoke of Valve's plans to create low-latency controllers with biometric input, and that Valve's eventual device--which has the current codename of "Bigfoot" inside Valve--will function as a home server that can broadcast to multiple displays.

"The Steam Box will also be a server," said Newell. "Any PC can serve multiple monitors, so over time, the next-generation (post-Kepler) you can have one GPU that's serving up eight simultaneous game calls. So you could have one PC and eight televisions and eight controllers and everybody getting great performance out of it. We're used to having one monitor, or two monitors - now we're saying let's expand that a little bit."

Following on from hardware manufacturer Xi3's announcement of its own Steam-friendly hardware, Newell spoke of how Valve has its own three-tier approach to how it sees itself and other hardware companies integrating various aspects of the Steam platform. According to Newell, Valve sees the types of hardware as "'Good', 'Better,' or 'Best'."

"So, Good are like these very low-cost streaming solutions that you're going to see that are using Miracast or [Nvidia's] Grid. I think we're talking about in-home solutions where you've got low latency. 'Better' is to have a dedicated CPU and GPU and that's the one that's going to be controlled. Not because our goal is to control it; it's been surprisingly difficult when we say to people 'don't put an optical media drive in there' and they put an optical media drive in there and you're like 'that makes it hotter, that makes it more expensive, and it makes the box bigger.' Go ahead. You can always sell the Best box, and those are just whatever those guys want to manufacture."

And Valve's position on all this, according to Newell? "Let's build a thing that's quiet and focuses on high performance and quiet and appropriate form factors."

War Z creator apologizes for controversy

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 02 Januari 2013 | 23.37

Outspoken The War Z creator Sergey Titov has apologized for the game's controversial launch (and subsequent de-listing from Steam) earlier this month. In an open letter to the community, Titov said developer Hammerpoint Interactive "failed to effectively communicate" its plans for the new zombie survival game, which led to some "very negative feedback" from members of the community.

"I became arrogant and blinded by the early success and quick growth of The War Z, our increasing number of players, numbers we were getting from surveys, etc., and I chose not to notice the concerns and questions raised by these members of the game community as well as others," Titov said. "This failure is entirely on my shoulders and if anything I owe thanks to that vocal minority and admit that I should have paid attention sooner. I chose instead to concentrate on the bigger picture: my dream of turning The War Z from being a game developed by a small indie team into a large online venture, instead of addressing small things first and staying focused on the game issues."

Titov further noted that the events of the past week were "especially humbling." He said the past cannot be changed, but promised the same mistakes will not be made in the future.

"I was too focused on how great we are and how a small independent team got their first game to over 700,000 users in a two-month period," Titov said. "Though that is something to be very proud of, allowing that to overshadow the existing community and their satisfaction was poor judgment."

Titov explained that community management and moderation for The War Z fell short. He said Hammerpoint relied too heavily on forum moderators, whose primary directive was to punish those who broke rules, he said, instead of engaging the community and guiding conversations toward constructive discussion. Additionally, Titov said there was not enough attention paid to talking about upcoming War Z features or appropriate dialogue through social networks.

"There wasn't enough presence of the development team on forums; there wasn't enough updates on development of upcoming features. We failed to communicate our position and messaging on the outside platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and various online websites, and when we did this we chose to rely more on arrogance rather than being humble and trying to understand why people were saying negative things," he said.

The solution to the community management and moderation problems, Titov said, is an overhaul of Hammerpoint's community management procedures and rules. "We're going to reevaluate publishing and marketing team performance, and I will make sure that Hammerpoint Interactive developers will have a much stronger voice when it comes to community management."

Titov also shared that one of his proposed ideas to engage the community further is to invite 10 players from around to the world to visit the Hammerpoint offices in Los Angeles, California. There, these gamers would meet the development team, get a look at in-development features, and addresses concerns, wishes, and other thoughts.

Lastly, Titov clarified that the current version of The War Z is titled "Foundation Release," which is a "first-stage" release used as a foundation to build on top of.

"I do believe that we aren't even close to uncovering the true potential for The War Z, and I hope that in the coming year, we'll be able to regain trust from people who were alienated by our actions and we'll be able to move forward and grow the game together," Titov said.

Controversy surrounding The War Z came to light upon the game's release through Steam last week. Users quickly began reporting numerous issues with The War Z. Further, many players criticized the game and Hammerpoint for being misleading and for censoring their comments about issues with the game. The game has since been pulled from Steam.

Day Z creator Dean Hall previously said the controversy left him "depressed," noting he contemplated leaving game development altogether as a result.

Tomb Raider gets multiplayer

Crystal Dynamics confirms upcoming Lara Croft reboot will feature a head-to-head mode.

First details on Tomb Raider's multiplayer mode will be revealed in Official Xbox Magazine's January issue, due to subscribers this week.

Tomb Raider is due out March 5, 2013 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

A Year in the Life of a Gamer - 2012

Succumbus it was a fine release, but the repitious nature of the game made it extremely boring extremely fast, I made it to lv 57 on 2 toons and that is about all I could take, dungeons where bad, warhammer already did the events, which I'm sure are mostly dead already hell after the first month I could rarely find more than 1 person around an event.  I admit they tried to be unique but failed miserably.  I enjoyed GW1 immensly, plus being free, but I can hardly stand to load the game anymore.

R18+: What Happens Next?

R18+ is officially introduced in Australia today, but what does this mean for previously banned games? And what about the states that are yet to introduce the law? Read our Q&A to find out!

R18

Today, Australia officially introduced an adult classification for video games, allowing R18+ rated games to be sold at a national level.

The introduction of R18+ for games in Australia comes after more than ten years of lobbying involving various states and territories, the local video game industry, and consumers from all over the country.

However, now that R18+ for games is finally here, a few questions remain unanswered.

In this special New Year's Day feature, GameSpot AU clears up any remaining confusion surrounding the introduction of R18+ for games in Australia.

So, R18+ for games is now officially here. But what does that mean?

The R18+ legislation is officially introduced today, January 1. This means that the Classification Board of Australia can now legally classify games as R18+, and these games can be legally sold and displayed at a federal level.

So what does "federal level" actually mean? Does my state qualify for R18+ games?

While the legislation for R18+ for games has been passed and enacted at a federal level, each state and territory is responsible for passing complementary legislation that will dictate how R18+ games are displayed and how the adult classification for games is enforced.

The ACT was the first Australian territory to officially pass the R18+ legislation. South Australia, NSW, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory have also officially passed the R18+ legislation.

Queensland remains the only state in Australia to not have passed the complimentary R18+ legislation. Earlier this year, the Queensland government specifically stated that it will not sell R18+ games from January 1 but instead await the result of a Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee report--due to be released on February 7, 2013--before debating the R18+ legislation in parliament and officially amending the state's law to include an R18+ classification for video games.

This means that R18+ games will still be illegal in Queensland from January 1, 2013, until that time when the R18+ legislation has officially passed through the state's parliament and the law amended accordingly to include an adult classification for video games.

If I live in Queensland, does that mean I'll miss out on R18+ games?

The R18+ legislation will most likely pass through the Queensland parliament by the end of February. It is unlikely that the Classification Board of Australia will rate a video game as R18+ before that happens.

What about the games that have been refused classification in Australia in the past? Does it mean games like Mortal Kombat will be re-released with an R18+ rating?

Not necessarily. The Classification Board must wait two years before it can re-classify a title. This means it is up to individual video game publishers to decide whether or not to re-submit a game for re-classification after the two year period has passed. So, for example, Warner Bros. may not choose to re-submit Mortal Kombat for re-classification since re-releasing a game two years after its original release may not be deemed profitable.

The Classification Board may also re-classify a game if a federal minister requests this to be done.

What about MA15+ rated games? Will some of them be re-classified as R18+?

Again, a two-year waiting period applies for all game re-classifications. Titles currently rated MA15+ in Australia may be re-submitted for classification to the Classification Board by the relevant publisher or at the request of a federal minister.

So what will be the first game to be classified R18+ in Australia?

It can either be a new game that is submitted for classification to the Classification Board on or after today, January 1, 2013 or a game that is re-submitted for classification (after the two year waiting period has elapsed) by either the publisher of said game, or after a request from a federal minister.

Does this mean Australia is finally in step with other countries in having an adult classification for games?

Yes!

How will this affect the future of video game classification in this country?

For this one, we're kicking it over to Ron Curry, the CEO of the Interactive Games and Entertainment Association (iGEA).

"Naturally, after ten years of lobbying, we are very pleased that January 1 will see the introduction of an R18+ classification," Curry says. "We are weary though of how the revised guidelines will be interpreted and if we are really getting an R18+ category, or just a movement of MA15+ into higher level of classification. Initially, we expect the Classification Board to be a little cautious in how they apply the new guidelines, so we may need to wait some time to see how the dust settles on this."

"Having an R18+ also means that we can now turn our focus on the much larger problem of classification in general in Australia. iGEA contributed to the recent ALRC Review of the National Classification Scheme and we look forward to working with the government to establish a truly modern classification scheme that is flexible and nimble enough to inform parents and care givers, reflect the real concerns of the public and is designed to keep up with rapid changes in content and content delivery."

Black Ops II - When the script goes AWOL

60 euros for a few campaigns is not worth the money. Besides, the campaigns are not that great to play for several times, for you get really bored.

Also, playing its multiplayer is also boring, because it is the same stuff you find in free fps games out there, in fact, there are many free fps games that are way better in multiplayer mode, for instance, planetside 2.
