EA management changes detailed - Report

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Polygon obtained an internal memo that confirms the executive appointments. It also indicated that Maxis general manager Lucy Bradshaw has joined Wilson's management team as head of the SimCity studio, while COO Peter Moore "continues to lead our Global Publishing and Marketing organizations, as well as EA's Worldwide Customer Experience and Global Media Solutions teams."

Other direct reports for Wilson include Rajat Taneja (CTO), Blake Jorgensen (CFO), Joel Linzner (EVP of business and legal affairs), and Gabrielle Toledano (EVP and chief talent officer), who will continue in their existing roles.

"These are exciting times for all of us here at EA," Wilson said in the memo. "Games like FIFA 14, launching this week around the world, are at the very pinnacle of quality for the current-gen consoles and an example of what great can look like across platforms, business models and geographies. We have more amazing games launching over the coming months, including our robust slate of titles for the next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft. Meanwhile, Mobile continues its amazing trajectory, and we're exploring new opportunities in digital gaming every day."

The original story is below.

A week after EA Sports executive Andrew Wilson was promoted to the role of EA CEO, the Battlefield and Mass Effect publisher has shifted its leadership structure, according to multiple sources speaking with Polygon.

EA Games Label executive vice president Patrick Soderlund will now see his responsibilities expanded, as he will take over as head of EA Sports, according to the report. Meanwhile, EA Labels president Frank Gibeau will reportedly henceforth run EA's mobile group.

In addition to leading EA's mobile business, Gibeau will take over as head of EA Origin, the position Wilson held--along with his post at EA Sports--prior to his promotion.

The information was leaked out of a company-wide "town hall" meeting today at EA. The company has not confirmed the reported leadership changes.

Wilson replaced John Riccitiello as EA's top executive last week, after the position was vacant for a period of six months. Wilson will receive an annual salary of $800,000 in his new post, while executive chairman Larry Probst will remain onboard during the transition and continue to receive a $1.03 million compensation package.

GTA Online microtransaction prices revealed - Report

People with early access to Grand Theft Auto Online have revealed to Eurogamer pricing information for the game mode's rumored cash cards, which can reportedly be purchased with real money.

The cash cards revealed earlier this week by a Reddit user have not been confirmed by Rockstar Games, but Eurogamer has learned that pricing will be as follows:

$100,000 Red Shark Cash Card - £1.99 ($3)
$200,000 Tiger Shark Cash Card - £3.49 ($5.5)
$500,000 Bull Shark Cash Card - £6.99 ($11)
$1,250,000 Great White Shark Cash Card - £13.49 ($22)

The prices come from a source with early access to Grand Theft Auto V's multiplayer mode, which will be released officially on October 1.

Eurogamer also points out that although GTA Online and GTAV are based in the same fictional world, prices for in-game items vary. A car that costs $1 million in single-player can be purchased in GTA Online for much less--around $150,000, Eurogamer said.

"Cash is king in this town. Solve your money problems and help get what you want across Los Santos and Blaine County with the purchase of cash packs for Grand Theft Auto Online," reads a description of the cards pulled from an XML file found on Rockstar's servers. "All purchased cash is automatically deposited into your character's bank account. Spend wisely, cash therapy is fleeting."

GTAV launched last Tuesday and generated $1 billion in three days, reaching that milestone faster than any other entertainment property in history. Rockstar Games will release the open-world game on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in 2014, according to one analyst.

How Thief on PS4 will use DualShock 4's features

The PlayStation 4 version of Thief will make use of the DualShock 4's new features, Eidos Montreal producer Stephane Roy confirmed in a new interview with the PlayStation Blog.

Roy said Eidos wants to take advantage of as many new, next-generation features as possible, and this includes the DualShock 4.

"For the DualShock 4, we use the light bar to reflect the light gem in the in-game UI, which indicates if Garrett is in the shadows or not," Roy said. "It creates a nice feeling when you play in the dark to see it illuminate or darken as you move through the environment."

The DualShock 4's new touch pad will be used for menu navigation and as a "more intuitive" way to perform actions like manipulating the in-game map or selecting weapons, Roy said.

Roy also spoke positively about the DualShock 4's new "Share" button. Being able to share images and video is especially meaningful for a game like Thief, Roy said.

"We think it's a great addition, especially for a game like Thief. We give a lot of freedom to the player, and we work really hard to create a systemic AI that will let the player find creative ways to play," Roy said. "Sharing those moments will showcase how they solved various situations--and we're pretty sure that players will find ways that impress even us."

Lastly, Roy said he is not only encouraged by the DualShock 4's new features, but also how existing ones have been updated for the new version of the controller.

"The best example of that is the motion control, which is way more precise than before," Roy said. "You can use it to adjust your aiming with the bow and the level of accuracy we get with it is really impressive."

Thief will be released on February 25, 2014 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. A Wii U version is not in development.

Grand Theft Auto V sales "extremely front-loaded" says analyst

Grand Theft Auto V sales are expected to be "extremely front-loaded," according to Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz.

In a note to investors today, Creutz said GTAV will have a shorter sales tail due to "high gamer anticipation" and the launch of next-generation consoles in November.

The analyst is now modeling sales of 25 million units for GTAV in the game's first year. Based on the $1 billion three-day figure Take-Two announced last week, Creutz said the open-world game is likely to have already sold at least 15 million units.

Take-Two has not disclosed specific unit sales figures for GTAV, saying only that the game has generated over $1 billion in global retail revenue to date. The game achieved this milestone faster than Call of Duty: Black Ops II (15 days) and The Avengers (19 days).

By comparison, Grand Theft Auto IV has shipped 25 million copies since the game launched in April 2008.

Creutz also said in his note to investors today that GTA Online--due to launch on October 1--should offer "ample opportunities" for content packs and microtransactions over the next several years.

"Call of Duty generates several hundred million dollars per year in digital revenue, and we think GTA could do the same," Creutz said. "Success here would take significant pressure off of next year's as-of-yet undetermined title slate."

GTA Online is rumored to feature microtransactions, though Rockstar Games has not commented on this yet.

According to Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian, GTAV is likely to be released on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in 2014 to "extend the value of the franchise."

Dan Houser on Bully sequel -- "I know I want to"

Rockstar Games cofounder Dan Houser is interested in making a sequel to 2006 action game Bully, telling Polygon in a new interview that he has numerous ideas for this potential game.

"I know I want to," Houser said about the potential for making a second Bully game. "Well, hopefully, you never know. There's a lot of directions I could go with that one, it's funny."

An idea some have suggested to Houser, he explained, is for Rockstar Games to make a future Grand Theft Auto game with a grown-up Bully protagonist Jimmy Hopkins as the lead. This probably won't happen, Houser said.

"I never saw him as being that level of degenerate," Houser said. "I saw him as a bad teen, because he comes from a tough home, who could go either direction. He's not going to be a carjacker. He's too white collar for that already. He's at a sh** private school, but he's going to end up being really happy because he's at the worst bit of his life, or being a sort of messed up white collar doofus."

"He was an unpleasant soul, but he had a heart. To some extent you could say the same was true of [Grand Theft Auto IV's] Niko in a bizarre way," he added. "But [Jimmy's] not trying to burn down the school, he's more trying to stand up to injustice."

Rockstar Games parent company Take-Two filed a new Bully trademark in July.

In November 2011, Houser explained that after the original Bully shipped, it was decided that Rockstar Vancouver--the lead developer behind Bully--would work on Max Payne 3 instead of a sequel to the open-world game.

"So we knew that we didn't want to start doing the Bully sequel instantly at that second with those guys--even though it is a property that, like [Max Payne], we adore and might come back to in the future," Houser said at the time. "There was just no impetus to do that then. So we said, 'You can do Max, and then we will see what we can do with Bully.'"

If the Bully franchise is to return, it could be one of the multiple next-generation games Take-Two currently has in development. In May, CEO Strauss Zelnick said, "We also have a extraordinary pipeline of titles in development for next-generation platforms, including groundbreaking new intellectual property and releases from our proven franchises."

Thief preorders unlock Bank Heist mission

Gamers who preorder 2014's Thief reboot will receive an "exclusive" Bank Heist mission, publisher Square Enix announced today.

The Bank Heist mission will task players with infiltrating the Stonemarket First Bank as they attempt to steal a family heirloom called the Star of Auldale.

"To this day, this heavily guarded and treacherous place remains impregnable, but that's about to change…," reads the mission's description.

The Bank Heist mission will reportedly put players' thieving skills "to the test," as they will need to outsmart security measures only found in the mission. Square Enix described the mission as a "true homage" to the Bank mission in Thief II: The Metal Age.

Thief will be released on February 25, 2014 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. A Wii U version is not in development.

Killzone: Shadow Fall features no XP progression in multiplayer

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 11 September 2013 | 23.37

There will be no XP progression in PlayStation 4 launch title Killzone: Shadow Fall, developer Guerrilla Games has said.

Previous titles in the series have tied unlocks and progression to an experience point system, similar to Call of Duty and Battlefield. Instead, the next-generation Killzone will feature player advancement through a series of challenges.

Explaining the change in a blog post, Guerilla community editor Victor Zuylen said Killzone: Shadow Fall will ship with more than 1500 challenges for players to complete. Challenges will vary in difficulty, with two examples given: a simple "destroy 1 turret" and a far more complicated "kill 1 enemy player with a laser tripmine while they are carrying a beacon."

Each completed challenge in Killzone: Shadow Fall adds one point to a player's rank, Zuylen added.

Another new feature in the game is the Spotlight System at the end of each multiplayer round, which features the top three players from the winning side and the top player from the losing side. One of the winning players is given a limited time to perform a flashy Spotlight move on the losing player, who gets the opportunity to perform a counterattack if their assailant is unsuccessful.

Zuylen also confirmed that the game's arsenal would all be based on skill, and that there would be no auto-aiming or recoil-less weapons. Each weapon will allow for two attachments, too, but not all weapons in the game will support each attachment.

There will also be no exoskeletons or jetpacks in Killzone: Shadow Fall's multiplayer at launch. "Their inclusion would introduce a wide number of new variables and exceptions to account for, and we want to focus on offering fair, reliable, and consistent Warzone customizability," said Zuylen.

The PlayStation 4 will launch on November 15 in North America for $399, and on November 29 in Europe for €399/£349.

Dead Rising 3 gameworld larger than first two games combined

Upcoming Xbox One launch title represents the largest world Capcom has ever made in the zombie franchise.

The Dead Rising 3 gameworld is larger than the first two games in the series combined, according to a new report from the Financial Post.

Capcom Vancouver representatives said players are likely to use vehicles to move around the world 50 percent of time due to its size. Unlike its predecessors, Dead Rising 3 will not feature loading screens between areas.

"We wanted to go truly open-world this time around. No more load screens," executive producer Josh Bridge said. "With the biggest world that we've been able to make, with loads of zombies."

Dead Rising 3 is an Xbox One launch title releasing with the platform on November 22 in North America and 12 other regions across the world.

The game features a new city, Los Perdidos, alongside new protagonist Nick Ramos. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Rockstar cautions fans about "inevitable" GTAV leaks

Less than a week before open-world game's launch, developer says "there's bound" to be info and asset leaks.

With less than a week to go before the launch of Grand Theft Auto V, developer Rockstar Games has cautioned fans that leaks from the game are, at this point, "inevitable."

"Hi all, now that we're within a week of game release, there's bound to be some inevitable game info and asset leaks," Rockstar Games said on its website.

Earlier this week, the Grand Theft Auto V world map surfaced, reportedly stemming from a Brady Games strategy guide for the upcoming open-world game.

Grand Theft Auto V launches exclusively for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 17. Its multiplayer component--GTA Online--will be released two weeks later on October 1.

Call of Duty still "in the realm of plausibility"

Call of Duty "still plays in the realm of plausibility," according to Activision community manager Dam Arich. Writing on his blog, Amrich explained that the latest trailer for Call of Duty: Ghosts--which featured combat in space--is "actually more science than science fiction."

Amrich said though the concept of kinetic bombardment--or "Rods from God"--has been used in sci-fi stories for years, it is also grounded in reality. He pointed out that the United States Air Force has considered using the technology as a means to attack without nuclear fallout.

"Say what you will about its over-the-top gameplay and action-movie attitude, but Call of Duty still plays in the realm of plausibility," Amrich said.

In the new campaign trailer for Call of Duty: Ghosts, a cylinder is shown speeding to earth from a United States orbiting space station. A voice-over says, "You never expect something you trust to turn against you. The rods didn't just decimate the land, they left us open to full-scale invasion."

Call of Duty: Ghosts launches on November 5 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii U. Versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will be released as launch titles for those platforms in North America on November 15 and November 22, respectively.

TimeSplitters Rewind heads to Steam Greenlight

TimeSplitters Rewind, the community-developed multiplayer revival of the series, has taken to Steam Greenlight to gauge player interest in the project.

Crytek, who owns the rights to the series after purchasing original developer Free Radical, has given the project its blessing. TimeSplitters Rewind is also being made using Crytek's CryEngine 3.

TimeSplitters Rewind is a multiplayer title made up of components of the original TimeSplitters games, and is being created by a team of around 35 part-time developers.

CinemaBlend reports that legal issues require the game's assets to be made entirely from scratch, and that TimeSplitters Rewind must be released for free.

Project lead Michael Hubicka said that TimeSplitters Rewind will be more of an HD collection of the series rather than a fully-fledged TimeSplitters 4. "Ultimately, Timesplitters Rewind will be like the Timesplitters HD Collection and if Crytek gave us the torch, like, said 'Okay you've proved yourself worthy: here work on Timesplitters 4' then I would absolutely be thrilled to work on that ASAP."

TimeSplitters Rewind is scheduled to release its pre-alpha test before the end of the year. The game is currently scheduled to be released for PlayStation 4 and PC, though the developer is said to be interested in porting the game to Xbox One.

Former Epic Games president joins Remedy board of directors

Former Epic Games president Mike Capps has been appointed to the board of directors at Alan Wake and Quantum Break studio Remedy Entertainment, GamesIndustry International reports today. Joining Capps as a new member on the board is Finnish digital security firm F-Secure president and CEO Christian Fredrikson.

At Epic Games, Capps oversaw the company behind the popular Unreal Engine and the Gears of War franchise, among other initiatives. He stepped down from his executive role at Epic Games in December 2012 and left the company altogether in March.

"Like any team, I think a good board is a combination of different kinds of skill sets, and different kinds of strengths that really come together," Remedy CEO Matias Myllyrinne told GamesIndustry International. "That's the way, in my experience, the best teams work. Obviously Mike has a tremendous track record in the games industry. He's been very successful and has proven himself over and over again. On the other hand, I think it's also good to get Christian's outside perspective, challenging many of the conventions that we hold to, whether it's about building an organization, how you do your planning, or how you build your studio as a whole."

Myllyrinne said the industry is currently experiencing a period of high uncertainty and risk, but pointed out that Remedy Entertainment could benefit from the upheaval overall.

"For me at least, it feels like it is a golden age of gaming where the cards are being dealt again, and there's great opportunity to be a very successful independent studio once again," Myllyrinne said. "And I think it's about embracing some of that confluence of factors."

Remedy Entertainment is currently working on Xbox One-exclusive Quantum Break for a 2014 release. According to its official description, the game "blurs the line between television and gameplay, integrating the two into one seamless, uniquely immersive experience."

Study finds children gaming nearly as much on mobile as console

According to a new study published this week by The NPD Group, children are playing games nearly as much on mobile devices as they are through traditional consoles. According to Kids and Gaming 2013, play behavior for children ages 2-17 has shifted significantly since 2011.

More than half (53 percent) of mobile device users reported that they spent more time playing on these devices this year compared to last year. The boost is most pronounced among children 12-17, who were found to spend an average of seven hours per week on mobile devices compared to five hours per week in 2011.

"Kids are engaged with mobile devices as less expensive tablets and an increasing amount of hand-me-down phones create greater accessibility to these platforms than before," NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan said in a statement.

Though desktop computers, laptops, and consoles remain the top devices for gaming, "almost" as many children are playing on mobile devices as they are on consoles and computers, according to the study. In addition, it found that children are starting to play games on mobile devices at a younger age than in prior years (age 8 in 2012 vs. age 9 in 2011). This starting age is expected to continue trending downward, the research group said.

"The question becomes whether this mobile usage will continue to grow for 2 to 17 year olds, and if usage will become more prevalent than gaming on consoles and computers as time progresses," Callahan said. "More importantly, we need to understand how these forms of gaming provide different types of experiences for young gamers."

The Kids and Gaming 2013 study is based on the results of an online survey fielded from June 26-July 18 this year. It incorporates data from 3,842 children ages 2-17 who currently play games on any device.

New Target streaming service coming to console

Retailer Target will launch its new Target Ticket streaming TV and movie service on October 1, according to a new report from Variety.

Users will be able to purchase or rent around 30,000 movie and TV titles through an assortment of devices, including PC, Mac, Xbox 360, iOS and Android devices, Roku set-top boxes, and Samsung connected TVs.

No mention was made of the Target Ticket app being available for Sony's PlayStation devices, though Variety notes that Target's intention is to release the service for every Internet-video device by the end of 2014.

According to the report, Target has signed deals with major films companies like Disney, Paramount, Sony Pictures Entertainment, 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros., Universal, and Lionsgate for content. TV networks signed up for the service include ABC, AMC, CBS, CW, FX, HBO, The WB, NBC, Showtime, Starz, and USA Network.

TV content will only be available for purchase, the report added.

Target Ticket aims to set itself apart from services like Netflix through support for early EST, including next-day TV episodes and movies before they become available on DVD. In addition, new Target Ticket users will receive 10 free movie downloads when they sign up and Target RedCard holders will receive 5 percent off all purchases.

Target Ticket does not carry a subscription fee, though Target divisional merchandise manager of entertainment Anne Stanchfield said this was considered. Ultimately, however, she said Target's own market research indicated users wanted the "newest content available," which is not available on subscription video-on-demand services like Netflix.

Microsoft announced in March 2012 that Xbox 360 users in the United States spend more time with non-gaming Xbox Live entertainment applications that they do playing multiplayer games over the service.

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 04 September 2013 | 23.37

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has announced (Japanese) that it will show more than 50 games at this year's Tokyo Game Show, including the first major details on Capcom's Deep Down.

As reported by CVG, the list includes a mixture of first- and third-party software for currently available and soon-to-be-released platforms. Of these, 10 games will be for Sony's upcoming PlayStation 4, with the remainder split between the PlayStation 3 and the company's PlayStation Vita handheld. Standouts include Tearaway, Gran Turismo 6, Pro Evolution Soccer 2014, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Knack, and Capcom's mysterious PS4 fantasy game Deep Down.

First shown during the PlayStation 4's February reveal event, and teased further in a new trailer on the game's official website, last month, Siliconera reported that Deep Down is being developed by Capcom Online Games. It is expected to be an online RPG that "supports a large number of players", and will require an Internet connection. While some players have wondered whether the game may be connected to Dragon's Dogma, Capcom has assured fans that Deep Down is a new intellectual property, with no connection to any existing franchises.

Tokyo Game Show 2013 will run from September 19-22 this year, including two business and two public days. GameSpot will be in attendance.

They aren't graphically intensive, but they have such soul and spirit, and also carry pretty decent art styles they are so easy to love.

Microsoft boosting Xbox One CPU, console now in full production

Microsoft has revealed a hardware revision to its Xbox One CPU; the system is now in full production ahead of its November launch.

Announced by Xbox chief marketing officer Yusuf Mehdi at the Citi Global Technology Conference currently being held in New York, and reported by GeekWire, Mehdi confirmed that the Xbox One's CPU has been boosted a further 150MHz, raising it from 1.6GHz to 1.75GHz.

Last month, Microsoft corporate vice president Marc Whitten announced that the company would be raising the system's GPU clock speed from 800MHz to 853MHz following earlier conservative estimates of the system's capabilities.

Though Medhi declined to narrow down the vague November shipping window for the Xbox One, the executive did say that the machine represents the company's largest projected launch to date. "This will be the biggest launch we've ever done by a wide margin in terms of units shipped at launch," he said.

Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb recently defended claims that the Xbox One was rushed to match Sony's PlayStation 4. The Xbox One will launch this November for $499/€499/£429/A$599.

Microsoft passed on Heavy Rain due to game's child kidnapping themes

Heavy Rain director and Quantic Dream studio co-founder David Cage has revealed that Microsoft turned down publishing the game on the platform, suggesting that "they didn't want the scandal" of being associated with a game with child abduction as a central theme.

The news came as part of Cage's presentation at the BAFTA Annual Games Lecture being held in London, as reported by Polygon. According to the outspoken French developer, while the Xbox creator "really loved Fahrenheit" and "really wanted to do something with us," the two couldn't come together on the developer's next project, with the pair philosophically opposed.

"Microsoft is a great company, I'm not complaining or criticising," Cage said, explaining that Sony was far more receptive to the game's concept and themes, resulting in the two companies moving ahead to collaborate on what would become the PlayStation 3-exclusive cinematic adventure, Heavy Rain.

While still independently owned, Quantic Dream has worked closely with Sony in recent years, and is currently preparing to release PlayStation 3-exclusive adventure game Beyond: Two Souls. The software developer also unveiled a PlayStation 4 tech demo called The Dark Sorcerer at E3 2013.

PlayStation 4 will support four controllers

The PlayStation 4 will allow four controllers to be used with the machine at once, Sony confirms.

Sony's PlayStation 4 will support up to four controllers simultaneously, the company has announced.

SCE Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida confirmed the PS4's controller support on Twitter, following news that Microsoft's Xbox One will allow for eight controllers.

The PlayStation 3 can support up to seven controllers, though few games take advantage of this capability.

The PlayStation 4 will come with a single DualShock 4 controller, and Sony has announced that red and blue variants of the controller will be introduced shortly after launch. The new controller features a touch pad, light bar, and a Share button.

The recommended retail price for DualShock 4 is £54/€59/$59.

The PlayStation 4 will launch on November 15 in North America for $399, and on November 29 in Europe for €399/£349.
